Happy Monday and welcome (back) to another post dedicated to my summer holidays in Burgundy! And this time there won’t be castles in this post (but as teaser … there will be in the next and last one about this fantastic region). Instead let’s have a little focus on the « biggest » city of Burgundy, the home of the Dukes: Dijon. With such an introduction you’ll understand immediately that this city has an important historical past! From the early 11th until the late 15th centuries and Dijon was a place of tremendous wealth and power, one of the great European centers of art, learning and science.
The city has retained varied architectural styles from many of the main periods of the past millennium, including Capetian, Gothic and Renaissance. Many still-inhabited town houses in the city’s central district date from the 18th century and earlier. Dijon architecture is distinguished by, among other things, « toits bourguignons » (Burgundian polychrome roofs) made of tiles glazed in terracotta, green, yellow and black and arranged in geometric patterns.
Dijon is also very well known for something else: the mustard and no I’m not speaking about the trendy color of this fall 😉 This condiment originated in 1856, when Jean Naigeon of Dijon substituted verjuice, the acidic « green » juice of not-quite-ripe grapes, for vinegar in the traditional mustard recipe. For your information … I hate this 🙂 But this is the kind of perfect gift so … we brought some back of course!
Dijon is a very nice city to discover by foot. On the ground you’ll find numbered symbols of an Own which is the lucky charm of the city, follow them for a short wall in the historical part of the city. But don’t forget … don’t go there on a Monday because many sites and shops are closed (maybe only during summer … I don’t know). You can climb up to the roof the the tower; you’re guided and receive interesting explanation and it’s not too hard at all! And don’t forget your camera as the view is worth it!
Next step was in a smaller town (even if Dijon is not that big): Auxerre. To be honest I knew about that city because of their local soccer team (A.J. Auxerre) hat had a famous trainer years ago (Guy Roux). The city itself is a little bit like Dijon and here as well you can discover it by foot following the symbols (this time it’s not an owl but the « Cadet Roussel »).
We walked along the Yonne and I was able to take some pretty nice pictures using the green nature as well 😉 There are many churches to discover but not all of them are in a great state unfortunately 😦 The clock tower is also a must see as it’s really beautiful.
Before stepping forward to the classic high heels I still have something to share with you … not a town but a little village called Noyers-sur-Serein. Everytime I go to an unknown area I try to find the best places and reading local guides helps a lot … so between Dijon and Auxerre we spent an hour or two in one of the most beautiful village of France. There’s a superb old laundry just before entering the village (tip of the day: park your car there and start to walk to enjoy the place). The old houses are beautiful and you have immediately the feeling to be in a great place! Not far from there (in Massangis) you have a group of passionate people who will take you on their small train to discover and old but very important connection and will tell amazing stories!
I hope you enjoyed this post and as promised … it’s time for the show shoes 😉 Those pictures are already some weeks old so yes it’s still very summer minded while fall has started for many of us! A great therapy when the sky is grey and it’s raining a lot!
What a stunning place to visit. I love all of the architecture. So beautiful it almost looks fake!

Hello, first exactly I thought on the mustard when I read Dijon! But I have to admit that I didn’t know so far that Dijon has that great history and it was in the past such an important center. Thanks to you I learned again something new and I enjoy this post with the pictures. Happy weekend!
